Covenant Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Who are the Diciples of Christ?

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is the first, and one of the largest churches founded in the United States, currently with over one million members and about 4000 local congregations in the U.S. and Canada.  It was started as a movement to bring about Church unity based on the “restoration” of New Testament practices and principles.

Ours is a covenantal church.  The people in each congregation call their own ministers, write their own constitution and conduct all necessary business.  Yet, in our independence, we never forget the love which unites us as we work through our denomination and the national and international councils for the Kingdom of God.

The symbol for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is the chalice, usually red) with the cross of St. Andrew.  It reflects our Scottish Presbyterian roots and the Lord’s Supper.

At Covenant Christian Church in Spokane, WA, we are seeking to reconsider our Christian convictions within a global context.  We provide a safe place to explore faith, question believs and reach towards new understandings as revealed by God’s love

Beliefs:

WE ARE A PEOPLE OF THE BIBLE.

We hold that the Bible is central to our faith.  We take the Bible seriously, asking not only what it meant to those for whom it was originally written, but also what it means for us today.

WE ACCEPT CHRIST AS OUR SAVIOR.

We declare Christ to be our personal Savior as well as the redeemer of the world.  The church exists to proclaim the Good News shared by Christ—God loves us and is present with us!

WE CALL FOR THE UNITY OF ALL CHRISTIANS IN CHRIST.

We see in the scriptures the affirmation that we are all one in Jesus Christ.  So, our main plea is for Christian unity.  In view of this, we declare, “We are not the only Christians, but Christians only.”  We strive to maintain a cooperative relationship with churches of other denominations and work together with them whenever possible.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO SOCIAL ISSUES.

Faith and the issues of society go hand in hand since God is God of the whole world.  Issues of human rights, peace with justice, hunger, etc. must be addressed by the Good News of the gospel.

Practices:

1. We teach the responsibility of th individual to grow in faith and discover the will of God for one’s own life.

2. Trusting that Peter’s confession of faith, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” meets the needs of the simplest person as well as the profound scholar, we do not require submission to creeds nor vote up on admitting new members.

3. We observe two ordinances instituted by our Lord.  In keeping with Christ’s teachings and example, we ask for a confession of faith preceding baptism.  We practice baptism by immersion.  We also observe the Lord’s Supper each week as an act of thanksgiving and dedication to God as did the Christians in the early church.  The Lord’s Supper is open to all Christians.

4. Members are received by:

A.  Confession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord,  and baptism by immersion following the example of our Lord, or by

B.  Statement of Transfer from  another church, regardless of the method of baptism.  You may become a member during the Hymn of Invitation on any Sunday.
