The Voiceless Homeless Choir

The majority of today’s homeless are families...  A recent study by the National Coalition for the Homeless found that one out of four homeless Americans are children, 12 years or younger…

Our goals are to create awareness of this national issue and dispel stereotypes, with the hopes of finally putting an end to homelessness.  To that end, we have we have partnered with local agencies, churches and businesses to create a choir of homeless and previously homeless adults and children… families… called “The Voiceless”.  Our intention is to give voice to the voiceless and power to the powerless.   The folks making up this choir are those people living at the “edge of the world”.  The choir gives them an intimate community, discipline, joy, empowerment and a place to tell their story. 

We have produced one CD and a video and we are currently working toward a new CD.  Many of our songs have been written by the members of the group, words coming directly from their hearts and experiences.

We are working towards growing our music programs for the homeless families in our region.  We have seen first hand our program empower the adults and children making up this choir.

We are hoping we can use the success of our program as a model to motivate other cities to do the same!  Music and the arts expand these people’s daily lives to something more… It feeds their soul in a way that nothing else can.  Being asked to perform and seeing the impact they are making in other’s lives gives them great pride. 

The Voiceless will continue to bring the issues to life through their music by putting a human face on homelessness, educating communities and encouraging involvement.
